The Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis Health Research Network (FMHRN), is hosting a three-part Racism in Healthcare webinar series. The series builds upon an emerging national movement to bring real change to the problem of racism within healthcare, as highlighted by the death of Joyce Echaquan in Quebec in September 2020, and the investigative report In Plain Sight, on Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination in BC healthcare, released by Justice Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond last November. We would like to engage in these discussions within Saskatchewan.

Exploring Advisory Board Members’ Experiences of Community-Based Participatory Research

Dr. Audrey Giles, professor at the University of Ottawa, is conducting research to better understand the experiences of people who have participated in community-based participatory research as advisory board members (i.e., been involved in the decision-making process). Topics discussed will relate to people’s thoughts about their involvement, relationships between researchers and advisory board members, and successes and challenges of involvement.

This research will be conducted through semi-structured interviews that will be over Zoom or phone.

The interview will take approximately 45 to 90 minutes. Participants do not have to answer any questions that you do not wish to.

If someone does choose to participate, they are free to withdraw at any time. If they withdraw, they will still receive an honorarium of $50 for their participation. Further, if you choose not to participate, this information will also be maintained in confidence.

Dr. Giles is available to answer any questions about the study: (613) 761-0092 (cell) or email agiles@uottawa.ca

Sharing Space: Indigenous Research in the Time of COVID.
A community of practice.

The AHA Centre, PAN and REACH are hosting a series of virtual gatherings where we hope to create space for people to come together and share about their research projects and some of the complications/limitations we face as researchers in light of COVID. Recruitment is challenging, trying to sort out ways for effective and meaningful participatory analysis feels like a mystery for some and so on.

We are offering a dedicated space and time for folks to come together and troubleshoot, share or even just vent together.

The Format
In advance of our gathering, we will reach out to a research team, inviting them to share briefly about their project. We will ask these teams to answer two questions:
  1. What worked well?
  2. What’s been tricky?
After the team has shared we will open the floor for discussion, questions and an opportunity to share and learn from our research community.

Dates
  • April 2021

Highlighting work from our team members

We are honoured to have an incredible team supporting the work of the AHA Centre. Namaste Marsden is a member of the AHA Centre’s National Aboriginal Research Advisory Committee (NARAC) and has been with us every step of the way since 2012! The insight and knowledge that she brings to our table is invaluable. We are so happy to see her hard work making a difference. Namaste recently co-authored the new Indigenous editorial policy for the Canadian Journal of Public Health (CJPH):

“Canadian Journal of Public Health adopts requirement for meaningful engagement of First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and Indigenous Peoples
In recognition of the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples to self-determine their economic, social, cultural and knowledge development, the Canadian Journal of Public Health (CJPH) now requires all authors to clearly describe how relevant Indigenous Peoples were engaged in order to be considered for publication. To our knowledge, the CJPH is the first scientific journal in Canada to adopt such a policy.”
